Chadar Trek 2018

Duration : 21 Nights / 22 Days

The word "Chadar" means " white sheet or blanket ". And that's what it appears like when you walk over the white frozen Zanskar river. This trek though a demanding one gives you all the thrills of a great adventure. Temperatures can plummet to as low as -30° and even though you walk through amazing landscape you have to be prepared for a really cold experience of course kept warm by glowing fires which we light up each evening at camp. Our daily trek begins at around 9:00am and by then the sun's up and blue skies bring cheer despite the cold temperatures. The trek goes along the Zanskar River in the region of Lingshed and constitutes a walk of around 15 days with 3850m / 12,628ft. Being the highest altitude reached. Many of these spots cannot be accessed during the summer months as they go through spectacular deep canyons and gorges. A once in a lifetime trek.

Day 01:

Arrive at Delhi . The city of India Capital. Check the Hotel and seight seeing around the City.

Day 02: Flight Delhi – Leh (3500 m)

Early morning transfer to domestic airport and flight for Leh . Pick up by car to Hotel, Acclamatise in leh for 3-4 days completely.

Day 03: Local Seight seeing

Seight seeing around Leh Palace, Tsemo, Chokhang Viahara, afternoon Shanti stupa and Samkar Gonpa. Over night at Hotel.

Day 04: Local Seight seeing

Sightseeing around Leh. Visiting Shey & Thiksey, Stok Palace and Hemis Monastries . Night at Hotel.

Day 05: Leh – Chilling - Tillit Sumdo

Morning Drive a taxi from Leh – Chilling. Tea break at chilling trek point and check the all trek gears and materials - Trek start to Tillit Sumdo. Night at Cave, Walking on Frozen ice 4-5 hrs.

Day 06: Tillit Sumdo – Markhalaga Bavo. 6 hrs

A early morning have a breakfast and walk start on frozen ice. During the walking better to use the Crams for unslide on ice. There are many caves and camping. (locals call it Bavo it means night helt at cave.) which can be used for the night Shelter.

Day 07: Markhalaga Bavo to Tib Yokma (6-7 hours walk)

Early morning get a tea in tent, trek start as usual. Most of the important thing we need a very chilled weather for best ice. overnight stay in cave / camp.

Day 08: Tib Yokma to Nerak Pullu (6 – 7 hours walk)

We can view of canyons while passing through frozen icefalls. We'll find human traces after Nerak Pullu. There are more than ten caves on the bank of the Frozen Zanskar River. Travellers prepare their tea and meals on open palces and sleeps in the cave and so cave is covered with black soot inside.

Day 09: Nerak Pullu to Lingshed village and Gonpas (5-6 hours walk)

In morning we start our the trek from Nerak Pullu. We steep walk till Lingshed village and leave behind chadar. Visit Lingshed village & villagers hospitality. Night at Family Home.
Lingshed is 41500mtrs above sea level and can only be reached by trek. It is one of the most remote parts of Ladakh. It can be accessed only by Chadar Trek in winter for 2 months. During summer it can be accessed by 5 days trek whether from Lamayuru or Padum. In winter 6 months is remains completely isolated.

Day 10:

Rest day and visit the Gonpa and explore the Linshed , How they live in winter wear with such a woolen warm clothing and use the Metal stove.

Day 11: Lingshed to Tsarak Do ( 6-7 hours walk)

From Lingshed to lingshed do we will ascending until catch the Chaddar again. Tsarak do is the also a summer trek point called the Jingchen. These night might be coldest than other, because the camping was in a confluence place.

Day 12: Trek from Tsarak Do to Pidmo Zanskar village. (5-6hours)

We continue on the ice and start our trail from Tsarak Do and walk for about 6 hrs till we reach Pidmo. These days we also pass through the small village of Hanamur, there are 5 hamplet. On the other side of river bank see also se the Zangla village and Castle. During the trek Wearing rubber boots is the best for 'Chadar Trek' because at times we have to walk on ice with water overflowing.

Day 13: Pidmo to Karsha (6 hours walk)

These days trekker can visit the Pishu nunnery and continue to karsha along the zanskar river bank. Night at Local guest house

Day 14: Karsha to Padum Zanskar. (4 hrs,)

Morning visit the Karsha Gonpa, This monastery is the largest of all the monastery in Zanskar and this monastery (Gonpa) was first founded by Great Lama Phagspa Shesrap (the translator of Zanskar). From the monastery, you have amazing and spectacular view of mountains. Night at padum in a Hotel / Local Guest house. Padum is the main capital of zanskar region. Altitute are 3950 mtr. There population are 97% Buddhist.Zanskari People depend entirely on perpetual snows in the mountains as a water source for their farm fields.

Day 15: Padum to Tsarak do drive by car. Night at Tsarak do cave and camping.

These day full of culture tour. Morning after breakfast, drive to Stongde village. Visit beautiful picturesque monastery built on hill top by Lama Marpa 950 years ago and visit the Zangla palace. Drive to Karsha from Tsarak Do. After running throught the Himalayan mountains, the Doda river from the north and the Tsarap River from the south meet near Karsha to become one river, which is called the Zanskar River. It flows into the Indus River at Nyemo.

Day 16: Tsarak do to Nerak Pullu. 5-6 hrs

Trek back from Tsarak do till Chilling on same route. The return trek is apparently quicker and easier. On the 19th day evening we will pick up from trek end point at Chilling and drive back to Leh.

Day 17: Nerak Pullu to Tib Yokma 6hrs

Day 18: Tib Yokma to Bakula Bavo 5-6 hrs

Day 19: Bakula Bavo to Tillat do 5 hrs.

Day 20: Tillat do to Chilling

Last day walking 3hrs and pick up by car to Leh night at Hotel.

Day 21: Day free at Leh

Shopping at Leh handicrafts center and in Choglamsar Tibetan handicrafts etc. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 22: Fly to Delhi from Leh Kabje Bakula hight Airport in India.
